Our History & Heritage

The Johnston family set up a bakery in Dublin before coming together with master bakers Mooney and O’Brien to share their baking expertise and craftsmanship to form Johnston Mooney & O’Brien.

As Ireland’s oldest bakery, Johnston Mooney & O’Brien has over 190 years of experience in selecting high-grade flour from the finest wheat harvests. Over time, we’ve refined our recipes so that all our quality ingredients come together perfectly to make your favourite fresh-baked breads, buns and rolls.

A healthy balanced diet has always been essential for living a full and active life and we believe our baked goods play an important role in maintaining your health.

In 1835, The Johnston family set up a bakery in Dublin before coming together with master bakers Mooney and O’Brien to share their baking expertise and craftsmanship to form Johnston Mooney & O’Brien.

By the 1890’s Johnston Mooney and O’Brien started to specialise in made-to-order birthday and wedding cakes that were made by master craftsmen, many of whom have passed on their baking skills to the next generation of master bakers. By the 1920’s, we had 10 Bread and Cake shops all around Dublin to keep up with demand: Finglas, Cabra, Kimmage, Camden Street, Rathmines, Parnell Square, Dominick Street, Capel Street, Stillorgan and Dun Laoghaire.

By the 1930’s, Johnston Mooney and O’Brien introduced the ‘sliced loaf’ to Ireland, making life just that bit simpler for their customers and by the 1960’s, we replaced our horse and cart deliveries with a new fleet of electric vans. The retired horses go on to pastures new. Today we have over 120 delivery vans, most of which leave the gates of the famous factory on Jamestown Road in the early hours. In the 1990’s, we moved our bread to the Jamestown Road, Finglas bakery - where it remains today.

As Ireland’s oldest bakery, Johnston Mooney & O’Brien have over 190 years of experience in selecting high-grade flour from the finest wheat grown harvests. Over time, we’ve refined our recipes so that all our quality ingredients come together perfectly to make your favourite fresh-baked breads, buns and rolls.

Our Bundys brand launched in 1975, introduced an American-style ‘sponge and dough’ bun recipe to Ireland. Still used today this process ensures that Bundys taste, consistency and freshness are the best on the market.  Baked in Clonee, Co. Meath and Johnston Mooney & O’Brien is a leading manufacturer of buns and rolls in Europe and our Bundys brand is one of the leading brands in the Irish market.

Paddy Meaney, father of the famous Colm Meaney, delivered Johnston Mooney and O’Brien bread for over 30 years. Colm himself was a part of the Johnston Mooney and O’Brien history and he would often be seen out in the van with his father before he found fame in the world of acting.
